Virtual Matrix allows for a 9800 camera video wall

The latest enhancements in IP-video have resulted in removing the need for high cost, custom build video walls.
Instead a video wall can be build from an array of PC workstations, each with 4 monitors, controlled from master workstations. A total 98 slaves can be controlled from one or more masters, making the total number of cameras that can be viewed 9800.

Ultra wide angle HD camera for power substations applications

Substation small

IndigoVision has released their ultra wide angle range of High Definition cameras, allowing viewing angles of 110 degrees with out any fish eye effect. This means where traditionally where you would have required 2 or 3 cameras, the same can be covered with just 1 HD camera.

The advantage the ultra wide lens offers is full optical correction is performed in the lens, which results in a higher resolution image, across the whole scene.

Cameras identify thugs

An extra camera is just one measure Coolangatta Police, together with the Gold Coast City Council, are taking in an effort to combat the area's rising violence.
.... we need to improve surveillance in relation to offender identification. It gives us another policing tool to identify an offender specifically, and it's used in court cases as well.

The offenders from Saturday night and last month's fatal attack, were both identified through closed circuit TV footage.
“It's a great system, but without support from City Council, offender identification would be very much limited. We rely on them to provide that for us.”

Should media detail specifics of how a crime was done or how much was taken

Following Linkedin report
Just watching the evening news and see a report on a holdup of a hotel. Details were given on how they timed it for minimum staff and that $25000 was taken.
Over the years I have seen I have seen similar reports result in an escalation of copy cat crimes. For example ram raiding was shown in Australia back in the 1990's as the latest trend in UK. With in weeks it was happening here.

Victoria Police credit Melbourne's cameras with helping them make 500 arrests last year alone

The Herald Sun today reported that 'Melbourne City Council had already increased the numbers of cameras across the city from 23 in 2007 to 54. Doyle has flagged a further increase if Victoria Police says they're needed.'

In a city like Melbourne this appears to be a very low number of cameras given the population. Particularly when compared with other smaller areas have a proportionally larger camera count. Example: The regional Victorian town of Balart having 20 cameras. Adelaide having 38 cameras and plan to install another 14 by the end of the year. Darwin is currently installing 157 cameras.
