Victoria Police credit Melbourne's cameras with helping them make 500 arrests last year alone

The Herald Sun today reported that 'Melbourne City Council had already increased the numbers of cameras across the city from 23 in 2007 to 54. Doyle has flagged a further increase if Victoria Police says they're needed.'

In a city like Melbourne this appears to be a very low number of cameras given the population. Particularly when compared with other smaller areas have a proportionally larger camera count. Example: The regional Victorian town of Balart having 20 cameras. Adelaide having 38 cameras and plan to install another 14 by the end of the year. Darwin is currently installing 157 cameras.

The Attorney General's Department has approved $5.1M of funding for safer suburbs projects across Australia in the past 12 months but of this funding, are we really seeing the upgrades occurring?

In our experience, councils that have invested in street surveillance and taken the time to review their true needs opposed to what the cameras are capable of have had very positive outcomes.
IndigoVision are behind the hardware driving many of these systems and have had great success in the implementation of wireless based systems with bi-directional audio to and from the camera. The audio in addition to high quality Pan Tilt Zoom images have resulted in the ability to not only clearly monitor problem areas but also warn trouble makers they are under surveillance.
